The annual winter cricket match will take place at the Rugby Cub on December 27th with an 1130am start. Everyone is welcome to play, and in the unlikely event of more than 22 turning up we will play 12 or even 13 a side. The match will be a sponsored Twenty20 between the seniors and the juniors. Michael Lyle will lead the senior side, while new club captain Gareth Gaw will be in charge of the junior side.

Last year’s match raised almost £200, despite only 14 players turning up. This year we are hoping to get at least another 6 idiots to play, which would give us two teams of ten and something approaching a proper game of cricket. For the record it was sunny but chilly last year. Primarily it is a sponsored event so we are aiming to play a bit in almost any weather, with the ideal scenario (for the organisers) being snow. A special luminous orange dukes’ cricket ball has been procured for the event of snow.

All 3 of Larne Cricket Club’s centurions took part in last winter’s match. There was no secret coaching, but people with enough enthusiasm to play cricket in the winter are clearly more likely to succeed in the regular season than those who do not fancy an off-season match. There also will be a festive tea after the match in the clubhouse.

The tea and ground rental are free for all members who collect £10 in sponsorship, or you can just pay £10 out of your own pocket if you prefer. Its £5 for under 15’s, and full copies of the year’s fixtures will be given out as well. There will also be a FREE paper crown for the first 6 people to arrive at the ground on the day.

There will be some restrictions in place…bowlers are to be limited to six pace run-ups and anything over shoulder high will be a no-ball. This is to prevent injury both to batsmen and bowlers alike. The match may also be shortened in the event of extreme weather or extreme shortage of players. Only lightening will result in the complete cancellation of the match, or if Ronnie Lough says it’s far too wet.

Please contact me at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or by text to let me know if you are playing and if you want a sponsorship form. I am hoping everyone from last year will play as it was such good craic, while a certain Mr. Burke was injured and is more than a little keen to play in this year’s game. There is no top-flight football on the 27th, while the day after the match is the Boxing Day bank-holiday, so almost everyone should be off work. Hopefully this will be enough to get a few more guys to participate.

Finally it’s also worth pointing out that this is the club’s only winter fundraising events, so if you really do not fancy playing please try and sponsor someone who is, or call out on the day and make an appearance and a donation!
